Que Viva Los 33 : Plaza Italia Santiago Chile

Basically the story is that 33 miners have been stuck down a mine in northern Chile for nearly two months. This week they were rescued live on TV with the images capturing the hearts of Chileans and mass audiences worldwide.

Yes there is definitely no shortage of media hype surrounding this ordeal, and here Tripeezy wishes only to offer a personal account of what it is like to be in Chile at this moment and to hopefully present a slightly different angle on the celebrations in this country after the last miner was pulled out of the ground.

First Day in the Tripeezy Santiago ‘Office’

Day 1 on the job in Santiago.
Paige: Let’s go to a winery.

Gino: Ok.

The Office

Yes. Paige Brown founder and CEO of Tripeezy travel guides has arrived in Santiago for the Start Up Chile program. So we decide to spend our first afternoon doing some field research for an upcoming Tripeezy guide ‘local winerys’. Hence our visit to Vina Cousino Macul.

The Metro

The beauty of this prestigious 100% Chilean, family owned grape crushing wine making estate is that it is situated literally smack bang in the middle of Santiago and after only a handful of metro stops south from Tobalaba and a short taxi ride we are out of the concrete jungle and into leafy wine land.

The Winery

We enter VCM and it’s like we are in the south of France or somewhere nice and winey like that. Ok shut up Gino; let’s just say the place is beautiful and super welcoming if you have spent the morning in the inner city. With vines spreading as far as the eye can see, impressively well kept wooden beamed fermentation ‘sheds’ housing the good the spoils of rich fruit, remnants of tractors from harvests of past and spring time greenery adding it’s floral touch on the mood, Santiago central seems more like a world away than 5 metro stops.

Gino: Mendoza Business Meeting

Gino manages and recruits the Tripeezy City Gurus that create our unique reviews! Here is a recap of his ‘business’ trip to Mendoza:

00:10 Hrs. Gino from Tripeezy lobs into Mendoza.

09:00 Hrs. Our protagonist embarks on his first day in this new city.
10:00 Hrs. Gino likes what he sees. Old cars. Aqueducts. Argentinean Mullets. Smiling faces. Italianised Spanish. Yes a language so hearty you can almost see it.

11:00 Hrs. Gino’s interpretation of Google Maps is interesting. He is not on the right street and has strolled a long way from where he is supposed to be.

11:30 Hrs. An old car yard man chuckles as he points Gino in the right direction. ‘No Café’s here amigo’. Gino agrees but doesn’t regret his walk into the mechanic sector of the Mendoza.

11:45 Hrs. Gino pauses to take a photo of a dead cat. His Dad doesn’t like cats so thinks he may enjoy the token. Gino then deletes the photo, as the idea is a bit morbid.

12:00 Hrs. Gino finally arrives in the sunny and bustling coffee district that is Avenida Sarmiento for the first of his many ‘business’ meetings for that day.

13:00 Hrs. Coffees are slurped and small cookies are consumed. Laughs are laughed and ideas are exchanged.

14:00 Hrs. Back to Hostel home base. Ariel the lovely Argentinean owner smokes, scoffs, smiles and complains that his ‘Novia’ girl friend gives him more trouble than his ex wife who he was married to for 25 years. Gino nods and eats bread.
